Hans K furniture is built to last, but they also need care and love.

Wood

Wood is a living material which changes its look during its entire lifetime. The wood’s grains and twigs make all wooden furniture unique. Hans K has a philosophy to always strive after the highest possible quality in all fields. When the production receives the wood, it is sorted after structure and color so that all furniture gets the most even, unique and beautiful pattern as possible.

We work with the following types of wood while producing our furniture:

Oak
Oak is a hardwood tree which can become more than 1000 years old. The oak has a beautiful grain and is much wanted because it is strong, but at the same time elegant and sophisticated.

Ash
Ash is a large hardwood tree within the Oleaceae family, and is together with oak and elm among our broadleaf trees. The Ash’s wood is hard and tough, but is easy to bend and has a bright color with a clear and very beautiful grain.

Birch
Birch is material easy to work with and has a bright and beautiful surface which alters from a yellow-white color to a red one. Birch is a common material when it comes to furniture and decorating. We often use birch in our color painted furniture (no structure).

Veneer
Veneer is surface covering, produced from a timber of high quality which is glued on to a construction of wood. On Hans K we offer ash veneer and oak veneer.

MDF
MDF stands for Medium Density Fibreboard and is a wood board made 100% of softwood trees. The material is very hard and the surface is smooth. The clean surface is good for painting or as a foundation for veneered furniture.

Care Instructions - Wood

We use solid wood as much as possible in all our products. This contributes to durable surfaces and a material that lasts for a long time. Wood is a living material, meaning that a tabletop can change size and move during humid periods, only to return to its normal position. Our surfaces are durable and best cleaned with a lightly dampened cotton cloth – always dry off afterward.

Practical Advice for Lacquered and Stained Furniture

Lacquered and stained furniture offers a harder finish than oiled surfaces. The lacquer makes the surface more durable and easier to clean. Avoid using airtight materials over the table surface, as condensation can form between the tabletop and the material. Regularly treat lacquered and stained furniture with furniture polish to protect the surface and enhance shine and luster.

Practical Advice for Oiled Furniture

With proper care, an oiled wooden piece of furniture can last a lifetime. Our oiled woods are natural materials that are affected by use, placement, maintenance, and humidity. We recommend treatment with Hans K Wood Oil, followed by regular care (approximately 2–4 times per year). This provides a natural and durable surface that effectively protects against spills, liquid stains, and dirt. Always follow the instructions carefully.

The oil is available for Oiled Oak and White-Oiled Oak.

Cleaning Stains on Oiled Furniture (e.g., Red Wine Stains)

Sand away stains with sandpaper.
Apply an even layer of Wood Oil over the surface with a cloth or brush.
Use a sanding sponge and work the oil into the wood grain direction.
Let the oil absorb for 30 minutes, and then wipe off with a soft cloth.
Let the surface dry for at least 24 hours before use.
For absorbent woods, repeat the treatment after a few days.
Cloths used should be burned or soaked in water due to the risk of spontaneous combustion.

Other Tips and Advice

Wood lightens over time. Vary the placement of objects to avoid dark spots.
Wipe up liquid spills immediately.
Always use coasters for hot or damp items.
Do not place furniture near heat sources, like radiators, as the wood may crack.
Avoid large temperature fluctuations. Indoor furniture should not be placed outdoors.
Be careful with hard and sharp materials to avoid scratches.
Dust regularly and use a lightly dampened cloth. Wipe dry with a dry cloth or microfiber cloth.
Use furniture pads under the legs to protect the floor.
In case of damage, contact your furniture dealer for advice.

Leather

If you want your furniture to be comfortable and unique, choose furniture with the leather on it. Leather will always add its authentical natural character to the product. It is a very elastic and shapeable material which makes your furniture much more enjoyable. Leather is a durable material and if it is cared for properly it can end up having a very long life and even growing more beautiful over the years.

We work with the following leather types when producing our furniture:

Genuine Leather
Our genuine leather is a light embossed semi aniline leather produced from the South American hides. The hides are soft and comfortable with an elegant look.

Bonded leather
Bonded leather is a recyclable leather. To form the bonded leather a leather waste is combined with a binder on a fabric. After that the surface is treated with polyurethane with a mat model to preserve looks, scent and feeling. The best solution for a surface treatment of the bonded leather is with products intended for PU and Bycast.

Elmo leather / Elmosoft
Elmosoft is a chrome free, soft and pliable Semi-Aniline leather. Outstanding comfort combined with excellent durability and an extensive shade card, makes it very suitable for the public environment. Compare it with the somewhat sturdier, Elmonordic. Visible insect-bites and scars from healed wounds add to the elegant quality of the leather.

Raw material: Grain leather from Scandinavian cattle. All Elmo leather is dyed through and tested at Elmo’s laboratory.

Leather is used in Hans K furniture, a material that is both durable and adds elegance and comfort. Here are some tips to keep the leather fresh:

Tips for Keeping Leather Fresh

Avoid contact with chemical detergents. Instead, use recommended cleaning products.
Avoid placing the furniture in direct sunlight or too close to a heat source.
Keep your furniture clean from dirt and dust, as these can damage the leather surface. Regularly vacuum with a soft nozzle.
Treat your leather products regularly with products specifically designed for leather.

Fabrics

Hans K aims for high quality in all fields. We therefore work with both, durable fiber like polyester as a standard fabric.

Hans K standard fabric Nature has been used for over 15 years. It is a durable fabric and has a minimum of 30000 Martindales in durability. We recommended 15000 for home environment and at least 25000 for public areas. Our Nature fabric is available in 3 colors and more colors on demand.

Hans K Nature fabric is a polyester, which is a synthetic material with high durability and wrinkle resistance.

Today polyester stands for approx. 20% of the world production, making it the world’s second most important fabric material after cotton. The polyester is also easy to clean because dirt easily comes off and the material dries fast.

If you want to add other fabric we use Pick Your own fabric, for example we work closely with Svenssons fabrics, and especially Svensson Macro fabric.

Care Instructions - Textiles

A chair is not always made of just wood but also textiles, which should last as long as the chair itself. Here are some useful tips to keep your textiles fresh.

Tips for Keeping Your Textile Furniture Fresh

Avoid placing your textile furniture too close to a heat source or in direct sunlight, as this can cause the color to fade. Sunlight can also degrade the quality of the textile fibers.
Regularly vacuum and clean your furniture, as dirt and dust can increase wear and tear.
Avoid using sharp objects around the furniture.
Use a textile cleaner in spray form for cleaning.

Sheepskin

Hans K sheepskin is a natural material in high quality.

Sheepskin is a natural, luxurious material that adds warmth and softness to your furniture. With the right care, it can remain beautiful and durable for many years.

Vacuum regularly using a soft brush attachment to remove dust and dirt. Spot clean stains with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

Avoid soaking the fabric or rubbing too hard to prevent damage.

Keep away from direct sunlight to avoid fading.

Care Instructions - Sheepskin

Sheepskin is a soft and warm natural product that requires a bit of extra care when washing. Here are some steps to help you clean your sheepskin:

Air Out Your Sheepskin

Allow the skin to hang outside in fresh air for a few hours. Damp weather is ideal as it helps the wool cells open up, pushing dirt away from the skin. Curly sheepskins will become curlier, and air circulation will make the wool smell pleasantly woolly again. Shake the skin thoroughly after airing to restore its fresh appearance.
Vacuum gently if needed, preferably with a brush.

Remove Stains

Wool is naturally oily and has dirt- and water-repellent properties. Minor stains or spots can be wiped away with a damp cloth or baby wipes.

Machine Washing Sheepskin

Washable sheepskins can be machine-washed on a wool cycle at 30°C or hand-washed. This is especially useful if the skin has become very dirty.
Use 1 tablespoon of liquid wool shampoo or another mild wool detergent.
Stretch the washed skin during drying to maintain its shape and prevent it from becoming stiff.
Allow it to dry flat.
Avoid high heat, as it can dry out the skin, and avoid washing it frequently.

Rattan

Care Instructions - Rattan

Rattan is a natural and flexible material. The rattan on your furniture consists of woven strands made from certain palm species, offering a beautiful and eco-friendly material that reflects design and craftsmanship. The weaving adds transparency, giving both physical and visual lightness. Rattan provides excellent comfort to your furniture, evenly supporting and adapting to your body. However, it’s important to note that rattan is made from a living material with long fibers, which may occasionally need trimming to prevent them from catching on clothing when the chair is used.

Tips for Keeping Rattan Fresh

Rattan is very strong but dries out over time, becoming more brittle and hard. This means it can crack under heavy load, so it should be regularly moistened. We recommend moistening rattan furniture about once a month to maintain its flexibility and resilience.
Avoid applying localized pressure to rattan furniture, such as standing on it with knees or feet.
Use a solution of about 3 tablespoons of soap flakes dissolved in a liter of lukewarm water, and spray it on the back of the rattan. Allow the solution to penetrate thoroughly.
Avoid soaking other parts of the furniture. Wipe away any excess water from the front of the chair with a clean, damp cloth, but let the foam remain on the back for a while so it can penetrate the rattan, softening and conditioning it.
